Sciatica

The sciatic nerve runs from your lower back through your hips and down each leg. The term sciatica refers to pain along that sciatic nerve. Sciatica typically only affects one side of the body and the pain and numbness can be felt all along the nerve and down into the leg. Sciatica can make sitting or standing for long periods of time very difficult.

What causes sciatica pain?

The sciatic nerve can become pinched, for example, by a herniated disc. It’s most common among people with a more sedentary lifestyle or people who have to sit for long periods of time. Age is also a factor since discs lose some of the water content over time, making them less flexible and more prone to injury.
